CT Production - A Winning Formula

Based on the South Coast of England in the beautiful area of Poole in Dorset, CT Production has a 26-year history of providing subcontract electronics manufacturing services, based on a strong sense of excellent quality and customer-focused service.

ct-trevartonThis company ethos is borne out by an impressive and steady growth pattern that owes its success mainly to goodwill references; as good as it gets in a tough, global environment. Despite its growth, CT Production has not remained completely unscathed by the migration of business to the Far East and when a long-standing contract saw quantities multiply fourfold it finally lost out to a company in China. "Many UK companies have streamlined every element of their process to remain competitive against strong global forces and we are one of them," explains Managing Director, Alan Trevarton. "We ended up winning the contract back from China simply because we can offer customers the quality and flexibility they, in turn, need to keep their businesses competitive. When everything was taken into account the company realised that the cost savings assumed by moving this contract to China were completely unfounded."

An Investors In People employer with a workforce of 37, the current facility is some 7500 sq ft with the company looking to increase this number by 5000 sq ft in the future. ISO 9001/2000 approved, the company also gained the coveted UK government Beacon approval as a leading light in the UK industry. CT Production is wise to the fact that continuous investment in technology and equipment is an essential part of the success of it s business and was one of the first UK companies to offer a lead-free service long before the RoHS directive on 2006. It began its relationship with Europlacer in early 2001 when it carried out research into the SMT placement equipment solutions on the market to evaluate a machine that could match both its current and future needs. On paper it seemed that Europlacer could not only provide the efficiency required but also offer a cost-effective and competitive option.

ct-2"Europlacer is also based in Poole and could offer us excellent local support but it was about far more than that when it came to our final decision to purchase their placement system back in 2001," added Trevarton. "Europlacer offered us the flexibility we needed in terms of component type, the number of intelligent feeders we needed and an innovative trolley system. While at the same time they could save us considerable time and, therefore, money with their off-line set up solutions. Their equipment portfolio offered us a broad range of options to meet our needs and importantly provided a capability between our old and new systems. The machines have proved very reliable over the years, but we also know that Europlacer can provide us with quick support for problems, if required."

As a subcontract manufacturing service provider, CT Production has future-proofed its business by working with a spread of industries including the leisure market, industrial controls, telecom, transport, medical and aerospace. The majority of products manufactured are circuit boards with the balance in final product assembly; half of all production is repetitive or scheduled and the other half unscheduled. The majority of CT Production's customers are based in the UK, although some of its largest contracts are from overseas such as the US and France.

ct-1CT Production and Europlacer have an excellent working relationship that goes a long way to the overall success of the heartbeat of the company - the production process. The most recent investment with Europlacer came when CT Production road tested the Europlacer iineo system. The iineo platform features many improvements such as a higher feeder count, increased board size, 01005 placement process capability and increased maximum component height. The platform uses the company's proven core features, such as the turret head, intelligent feeders, powerful software and new technologies such as linear motors and digital cameras. It is widely configurable, allowing for single or dual linear motor gantry including a turret head with 8 or 12 pickups, one or two board positioning mechanisms, oversized board options, and feeders in the front and rear or front only.

"Our success is due to our total commitment to quality, customer satisfaction and flexibility, so we, in turn, have to demand these qualities from our suppliers," summarised Trevarton.

"Europlacer has always delivered and we consider this a winning formula for both companies."
